Painful loss for Sox

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Red Sox fell even further behind the New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays last night.

Red Sox, who took a 2-1 lead over the Rays in the eighth inning, were taken into extra innings.
Boston ultimately fell, 3-2, when Dan Johnson ripped a Scott Atchison offering over the right-field fence in the bottom of the 10th.
The Red Sox broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the eighth when catcher Victor Martinez hit a solo home run into the right field seats off relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit.
Martinez was 4-for-5 after a 10th-inning single and he has three homers in the first two games of the series.
David Ortiz followed with a single and then Adrian Beltre reached safely on a broken-bat infield single. Both runners moved up a base, but Benoit escaped further damage when he got Mike Lowell to pop out.
Clay Buccholz, looking for his 16th victory, was masterful for the Red Sox.

Boston opened the scoring in the fourth off Matt Garza.
Martinez singled to right center and Ortiz hammered a long double, putting runners on second and third with no out. Beltre hit a sacrifice fly to left to easily plate Martinez with the first run.
Tampa Bay tied it in the seventh when Carlos Pena, who was on first, scampered to third on a throwing error by Buchholz.
Matt Joyce then lofted a sacrifice fly which J.D. Drew caught in right field. Pena easily trotted home with the tying run.
The Red Sox fell 5 1/2 games out of first place.
Okajima off the DL
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The Red Sox have activated reliever Hideki Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Okajima from the 15-day disabled list and optioned right-hander Michael Bowden to Triple-A Pawtucket.
The moves were announced before Boston's game last night at Tampa Bay.
Okajima had been out since Aug. 6 due to a strained right hamstring.
